Welcome to Rocco’s house.

Located at the heart of the cultural and culinary explosion that is Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, R House is one of the pioneer restaurant venues that put Wynwood on the map as a national destination.  Launched by executive chef/owner, Rocco Carulli, and his director of operations/husband, Owen Bale, in January 2014, the venue’s concept evolved from Chef Rocco’s vision of a place to enjoy food, art, and music all under one roof.

With decades of experience cooking and running restaurants from Provincetown, Massachusetts to San Francisco, and hosting dinner parties on his days off, opening a restaurant was a natural fit for Rocco.  He was drawn to the vibrancy, diversity and youth of Wynwood, and was excited to stake a claim in such an emerging community.  In January 2014, Rocco opened “Rocco’s House” in a grand space on the corner of 28th street and NW 2nd avenue.  With a floating art gallery curated by White Porch Gallery, and a sprawling outdoor patio, this dynamic space welcomed a very enthusiastic clientele.

Drawing on his Italian-American heritage along with his extensive work in kitchens across the country, Chef Rocco offers a diverse menu filled with a unique selection of both rustic Italian dishes, and farm-to-table American small and large plates.  At the bar, a chef-driven infusion program pays homage to seasonal infusions.  Signature cocktails are inspired vodkas, bourbons, and other liquors infused with tropical fruits, fresh herbs, and spices. The wine list—curated by Chef Rocco himself — favors small vineyards and a balance of New and Old World labels.

Now a neighborhood mainstay, R House attracts foodies, hipsters, and everything in between.  Rocco is there nightly serving exceptional chef-driven dishes, and the party doesn’t stop after dinner is finished.  With live djs and themed parties, there is something happening every night at R House - and every Sunday R House is the home of the “Best Drag Brunch in Town.”

R House accolades of note include receiving awards for Best Wynwood Restaurant 2014 (Miami New Times), Best Margarita In Miami 2015 (Miami New Times), Miami’s Best Boutique Restaurant (Johnson & Wales University Zest Awards) and being appointed Wynwood Culinary Captain at South Beach Wine & Food Festival 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Rocco Carulli

“Home is wherever I can cook,” says Rocco Carulli, executive chef and owner of R House, located in the heart of Wynwood. Born in New Jersey and raised by parents who immigrated from rural Puglia, Southern Italy, Rocco was always drawn to cooking. From a young age, Rocco would peruse the local market with his mother, gathering fresh ingredients to bring home.  He learned from his father how to butcher lamb and rabbit, and how to prepare fresh hand-made pasta with his grandmother.  Rocco’s love of cooking is deeply rooted in this special time spent with loved ones.

After a brief foray into banking and accounting as a young adult, Chef Rocco kicked off his culinary career at the age of 24, enrolling at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. After graduating, the aspiring young chef took his newfound skills to a number of culinary hotspots in the United States. After brief stints in New York, San Francisco, and Miami, Rocco found his home in Provincetown, Massachusetts - small coastal resort town at the extreme tip of Cape Cod.

After just a few years in Provincetown, Carulli was offered the opportunity to lease a seasonal restaurant decorated with fine art, called Café Edwige.  He seized the opportunity, creating the revamped Edwige At Night, which he ran for thirteen seasons.  Carulli helmed the kitchen and hosted guests in the dining room of the quaint, 75-seat bistro.  He relished his ability to interact with the loyal guests that he’d come to know by name over the years – a key characteristic of Carulli’s style of hospitality for which he has become renowned in Miami today.

After many years of success with his seasonal venture, Chef Carulli felt it was time to seek a year-round project where he could showcase his unique combination of head chef and front of the house expertise. Rocco had spent off seasons working for the late developer Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties at Wish Café in South Beach, so the Magic City was his obvious choice.

With much encouragement from family, friends and customers, the talented chef and entrepreneur decided to open his own restaurant in the emerging arts district of Wynwood. R House, or as locals affectionately know it, Rocco’s place, is a perfect display of the chef’s culinary talent, vibrant personality, and long-standing industry experience. Naturally, art has been incorporated into the restaurant, as it curates the third of Chef Rocco’s three pillars of restaurant hospitality – menu, service, and environment.

Inspired by his Italian-American heritage and his experience working in New Californian farm to table restaurants, Chef Rocco has crafted a menu that focuses on rustic Italian and farm-to-table American dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced as close to home as possible. A great believer in sustainable food and local sourcing, Chef Rocco is a recent recipient of the Slow Food Movement’s Snail of Approval Award – a source of great pride. He has also represented Wynwood as its ‘Culinary Captain’ at South Beach Wine & Food Festival for the past three years.

Owen Bale

R House director of operations, Owen Bale, never imagined himself pursuing a career in Miami’s hospitality industry, as his original career was on the other end of the spectrum in finance and real estate.  That all changed when Owen met Chef Rocco Carulli while on vacation in Miami in 2010.  An instant connection ensued, and without hesitation, Owen left his prestigious job at an investment management firm in London’s Mayfair.  The magnetic duo decided to embark on the great adventure of launching a new restaurant business together – today’s local favorite, R House Wynwood.

With a head for numbers and logical problem-solving, combined with an insatiable obsession for London gastropubs, rustic Mediterranean cuisines and craft cocktails, Owen has been an integral player in the creation of R House since its inception.

On a day-to-day basis, you are likely to find Owen playing maitre d’ at the front desk, a role to which his friendly and hospitable spirit is perfectly suited. On other occasions, you will find him performing any number of business activities – from coordinating logistics for corporate dinners, weddings, and other private events - to collaborating with the team at menu development meetings, and forever spearheading marketing and PR initiatives.
